Photovoice is a methodology in which the expressive qualities of visual means (read: images) are used to convey meaning. It has successfully been applied in a variety of different disciplines and context. In this seminar we present worked examples on how photovoice traditionally has been applied, both from a researcher perspective unfamiliar with the visual art tradition and from an artistic perspective unfamiliar with the systematic approach that we call narrative research as a method of inquiry. From there, our intention is to try and disturb the balance between text and images in our representations of qualitative findings.  To think images into existence from a compositional analytical perspective instead of building on the story behind the picture is a considerable challenge for social science researchers.  We present both a framework and an empirical option, that illustrates how we have put this compositional analytical lens to work in one of our own photovoice projects conducted at KU Leuven.  After this seminar, you will have to decide whether your visual data will ‘speak for themselves’ or will be ‘absorbed by the narrative tradition’.  Our focus is on the use of still images in research.

Date: Monday Febr. 27, between 12.00 and 14.00u, in the HIVA conference room 00.11, Parkstraat 45, 3000 Leuven
