Doctoral studies comprise of 240 credits (equivalent to four years of full-time studies) and is intended to end with a Degree of Doctor of Philosophy. It is also possible to finish the education with a Licentiate Degree (120 credits).
Before applying for your doctoral studies we recommend that you obtain as much information as possible about doctoral (third-cycle) studies at the University of Gothenburg. It may for example be a good idea to contact current doctoral students, tutors and other scholars at the Department where you would like to study. This can give you a good picture of life as a third-cycle student and of the rules and regulations governing the education. It may also give you information about which projects are available, how to finance your studies and what future prospects the studies might bring.
Eligibility and admission
To be admitted to doctoral studies it is required that you meet the general entry requirements. A person meets the general entry requirements for doctoral studies if he or she
- has been awarded a second-cycle qualification,
- has satisfied the requirements for courses comprising at least 240 credits, of which at least 60 credits were awarded in the second-cycle, or
- has acquired substantially equivalent knowledge in som other way in Sweden or abroad.
In addition there may be specific entry requirements for a third-cycle subject. These specific entry requirements are to be indicated by the general syllabus of the third-cycle subject. The general syllabus can be found on the faculties’ websites.
